After living in Morocco for a year, I fell in love with the simplicity of some of the seating in living rooms. Don’t get me wrong, Morocco is not really known for it’s simplicity in design. I have seen a lot of heavy upholstery fabrics in living rooms where colors and patterns are mixed in some very colorful combinations. There can certainly be a lot of design overwhelm–color, texture, patterns–but when you take a deeper look at things you can also find a lot of simple elements to create a truly beautiful and livable room.
One of the simple elements I came across often was the use of floor cushions. Traditional sofas are around but low seating and floor cushions are also a big thing. In a previous life, I was a big fan of low seating. I loved having floor cushions gathered around a low coffee table and using it as a more casual dining area. Now that I’m back in a place of my own, I’d like to get back to some of the low seating dinners. A few weeks ago, my crafty mother did me a huge favor and made me a pair of floor cushions. From my extensive fabric collection, I chose an embroidery with a medallion type design. This navy embroidery motif is set against a natural cotton twill fabric. Using a cotton twill fabric makes it sturdier for use on the floor. To back the floor cushions, I dug up a beautiful indigo throw that I had from many years ago. The throw had a big chunk cut out of a corner so I couldn’t really use it as a throw but I didn’t want to throw it away since it was a really beautiful fabric and color. It has somewhat of a worn in look with a soft hand. Again, it’s tough enough to end up on the floor without getting ruined. We added a few ties to keep it all together though after we finished decided we could probably add a few more ties.
I have pulled a few of my favorite floor cushion and low seating inspirations to share with you. Though I still have a ways to go, two floor cushions doesn’t really make a party, I think we’re off to a good start.
